It is the unconventional that excites Docto and characterizes his works, making his art so unparalleled. He is driven by the desire to uncover the diversity of life and express this in his images.  

 

Cuban artist Osmiel Cespedes Elizarde discovered a love for art early in his childhood. Born on 13 June 1987 in San Nicolas de Bari, a village in the province of Havana in Cuba, at the tender young age of 5 he was already at work sculpting with jobo wood. At 9, he turned to another passion that he has not given up to this day: painting. His mother, a highly acclaimed artist, gave him the nickname "Docto". It became his professional name that marks his works for eternity. 

 

 

STAGES IN HIS 
ARTISTIC CREATIONS

 

From 2000 to 2007, the artist himself described his soaring launch into the artistic world as "El Despegue". His core theme during this period was the horse, a life form that for him symbolizes respect, sensitivity, tender sophistication and yet savagery. Working in oils with a realistic style of painting, he expressed these views in an authentic portrayal.

 

In 2007, Osmiel combined the horse theme with the characteristic Cuban vegetation. The artist imbues this "Paisaje figurativo" ("figurative landscape") with his intense connection to nature. During this period, Docto playfully merges figurative and realistic elements. This technique allows him to combine fantasies and visions with humorous ambiguity and recreate this on canvas.

 

 

CHARITABLE PROJECTS

 

In 2004, Docto was asked to design a mural for the town of San Nicolas de Bari. This social project traces the founding and development of the town in the form of an incomparable wall painting.

 

In addition, since 2004 the artist has volunteered his time teaching Cubans of all ages to draw and paint. His most frequent students are children, whom Docto hopes to inspire with an enthusiasm for painting.

 

In December 2011, Docto started on another mural project together with other renowned artists from Mayabeque; this one addresses this theme of Cuba's independence.

 

 

EL DOCTO

 

"El Docto", as the neologism-loving Cubans call him, is a passionately self-educated individual. This gift is reflected in his unconventional style that is present in all of his work. Nothing about this artist's life appears to follow a familiar pattern. He won his first arts competition at the age of 13 and began marketing his art.

An international breakthrough took place in 2011: a few of Docto's pieces were on display at the first international fair for Cuban art in Miami.

 

In the summer of 2015, the artist took part in a Cuban music event in Timmendorf Beach and showed his work there to great success.

 

Docto is an aspiring and charismatic young artist with vision. He is a painter of transition, whose artistic stages merge together harmoniously along a life filled with hurdles thanks to his charismatic nature, always offering up new and creative pieces. His art allows him to continue to realize anew fantasies, a zest for life, humour and seemingly impossible ideas by bringing them to life in oils.
